The main point that most TPO-pushing articles might use is energy efficiency, pointing out that the material holds in temperatures better and that’s the big reason to choose it. However, while EPDM isn’t as energy-retaining, it’s more protective and cost-effective over time.

To counter the elephant in the room first, base EPDM manufacturing is synthetic rubber which is black. That absorbs sunlight and provides heat for colder regions, which can save money on electric bills. 

It can also be found in white that, while it’s not as reflective as TPO, provides options for different areas and does a good job of bouncing the UV rays away. It’s that option between coloration, though, that puts EPDM on top.

Since the modern world is moving toward energy conservation and eco-friendly business models, it’s a good idea to have some form of greenery or solar panels on your roof. TPO will reflect the sun away from your plants and panels while EPDM will draw it in.

By doing that, it will provide better photosynthetic capabilities for your plants and more energy for your solar panels. The latter translates to less electricity usage and more free energy for your business, so temperature containment leaves out the best reason for EPDM.
